1 RARE Confederate Double D-Guard Fighting Knife Estimate: 3,500.00 - 6,500.00 USD
An original and authentic Civil War Era Confederate Double D-Guard Fighting Knife (some also refer to this style as a Short Sword) Measures 24" overall length, blade measures 18-1/2" length, width of blades tapers and is just shy of 2-1/4" at widest point. The grip itself is a very well preserved single piece of wood through which the tang passes, terminating in a peen at the rear of the primary D-Guard, naturally preserved by the oils of human touch from being held which has left remnants of darkend patina. EX- From a Major Private Midwestern Collection; Southern Illinois. Our consignor inherited this extremely fine example of Confederate Double D-Guard Fighting Knife from his step father who was an avid collector of very rare and one-of-a-kind relics. This vast 70+ year museum-style collection includes mostly extraordinary items never seen by the public market, the majority purchased privately since the late 1930's. As of now, we have not asked our consignor for permission to release the name of this collector, however, if allowed the release of the original collectors name we will update this listing prior to auction. There is probably no more iconic Civil War image than that of the young Confederate soldier, heading off to war with an absurdly large fighting knife in his hand or on his belt. Early war southern ambrotypes and tintypes provide us with a dizzying array of large, wicked, and sometimes comical fighting knives of all descriptions, usually made by local blacksmiths for the southern boys of 1861 to take to war. Over the years, the majority of these local knife makers have remained anonymous, although sometimes certain traits and characteristics of surviving knives can help us to make general statements about the likely region or state that an unmarked knife may have originated in. More recent scholarship has allowed us to identify some knives as to their maker, even though they bear no markings. The classic southern fighting knife was usually overly large and robust, with an overall length that was typically between 12” and 24” and with blades that varied from about 8” to over 18”! This example of a scarce and desirable Double D-Guard Confederate Fighting Knife is quite massive and could almost be called a short sword as much as a knife! The knife is somewhat crudely made and assembled yet was definitely hand crafted by a skilled master, suggesting that the maker was probably a blacksmith and not a cutler. The knife is about 24 “ in overall length, with a heavy 18-1/2“ long spear point blade without a pronounced median reinforcement ridge and double edge on both sides. The blade measures just over 2-1/4” wide at its widest point, and is secured to the hilt via its iron tang, which is peened solidly at the pommel cap. The second guard extends at a 90-degree angle from the primary guard and was forge welded onto the main guard. The massive knife, despite the large, fairly thick, blade and significant weight, is relatively well balanced. The wooden grip is smooth, naturally aged and preserved with no real palm swell. The consignor recently pulled this from some of the collection he inherited and admittedly applied some wood preserver on the wooden grip handle and lightly covered with Old English Scratch Remover. The blade was only lightly cleaned. Overall this is simply a really impressive, completely correct and authentic Confederate Civil War Fighting Knife. The knife has a really appealing look to it and the blade shows quality material. The opportunity to own a large, and scarce “Double D-Guard” Confederate knife does not occur too often and the consignor has placed a very low, extremely reasonable reserve.
2 Architectural Hand Painted Cathedral Stained Glass Estimate: 5,500.00 - 20,000.00 USD
A truly MAGNIFICENT, HISTORIC and EXTREMELY RARE handcrafted 17th-19th century architectural domed stained glass cathedral window from a St. Louis, Missouri Cathedral or home of a Archbishop. It is believed that this was once part of the Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France (Est. 1770). However, we have no solid proof of what church it came from at this time but with the markings on the solid iron frame, old St. Louis archives and/or records this may be able to be proved, or at least find out exactly where it is from. With the right provenance this could be a VERY VALUABLE and HISTORIC piece of religious artwork. It's absolutely breathtaking! The extraordinary hand painted glass window appears to be much older then the custom made Victorian era wrought iron frame (late-1800s), possibly used in another cathedral in Europe and shipped to the states in the mid 1700s to mid 1800s. [The Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, formerly the Cathedral of Saint Louis, and colloquially the Old Cathedral, was the first cathedral west of the Mississippi River and until 1845 the only parish church in the city of St. Louis, Missouri.] The hand painted artwork upon the glass is truly exquisite and has been very well preserved. This is historic Architectural Salvage at its finest. In a very heavy, custom hand wrought iron frame with marked patent tag on the frame [Reads: Jos. F. Chmelir - PATENT - St. Louis, Mo]. CONDITION: Very Good condition, especially for its age. No visible fading, does have some slight damage to several of the glass panels, but is in tact and can be easily fixed, restored or left in it's current state. Similar examples of original antique religious stained glass windows have sold over $500,000, some much more. A larger antique example (5' 11" x 2' 0") sold in auction for $28,000, on 2010 and was originally from the home of Archbishop Kenrick The first Archbishop of St. Louis, MO. Archbishop Kenrick (1806-1896). Another example sold in auction for over $7,000 and originally was from New York's St. Joseph's Cathedral. There is a price reserve on this piece of historic architectural salvage. If it doesn't sell, we plan to put the time in to researching the history and will try once again with documentation and provenance.
3 Orig Frank Rowland Mixed Media Abstract Painting
Original Frank Rowland Mixed Media Abstract Painting. Original mixed media on paper, signed by artist in the lower right hand corner. Professionally framed and matted. Pristine condition. This is an EXCEPTIONAL original hand painted mixed media painting with applied gold leaf and metallic mediums. Painted by a well-known and listed artist. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Diversity is the key word in Frank Rowland’s life and artwork. Born in Altoona, Pa, in 1927; he has lived throughout the United States, spending length of time in Pittsburgh, Phoenix and Chicago. His interest in art began as a child accompanying his father to W.P.A. art classes at night. His talents were honed through studies at the School of Display Art in Pittsburgh, the School of the Art Institute, the American Academy of Art and the Academic Art Foundation all in Chicago. Unable to limit his creativity to fine art, Rowland has been actively involved in architecture, industrial design, illustration, designing sets for film and stage, museum exhibits, book design, film making and commercial art. All this combined with his vast output of paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, murals and sculpture, attest to his creative energy and variety of endeavor. Frank Rowland’s talents as a master printer are widely recognized in the field of fine art serigraphy. He has been instrumental in developing and expanding this medium of expression. Artists with such diverse styles as Erte, Agam, Peter Max, Henrietta Wyeth and Frank Gallo, among others, have had Rowland translate their images into quality limited editions. All of Leroy Neiman’s early prints were printed by him. Now, Rowland focuses mainly on his own art. In his own work, Frank Rowland refuses to be limited to one style or mode of communicating with the public. This results in a diversity on his imagery. All his art does show a highly developed sensitivity to form, color and line. This allows him to steer the viewer into a common emotional response for each piece; yet allows the viewer to interpret the art from their own associations. Rowland’s artwork is featured in the collections of such companies as Crocker National Bank, Playboy, Encyclopedia Brittanica, Sears Roebuck Co., Arthur Anderson, Allstate Insurance, Price Waterhouse, Coldwell Banker, Gould Inc., IBM and many others.
5 RARE 19C Solid Silver Spanish Colonial Stirrup Estimate: 1,000.00 - 2,500.00 USD
After you are done reading the description and have carefully looked through the detailed pictures, we invite you to take a few minutes to do your own research so you can fully understand the importance, extreme scarcity, and beautiful craftsmanship of this antique sterling silver Spanish equestrian relic. This is a 19th Century Spanish Colonial Ladies Equestrian Sidesaddle Stirrup Slipper; South American, most likely originally crafted for royalty from Peru or Bolivia; ca.1820-1880. GUARANTEED TO BE AT LEAST 92.5% (STERLING SILVER), BUT WE BELIEVE BY THE ASSAY TEST THAT IT IS PURE SILVER. The slipper stirrup is very heavy, a staggering 1lb & 6.25 oz's (22.25 ounces total).A pair of identical stirrup slippers would have hung from sidesaddle on one side, and from the quality of silversmith work on just this stirrup alone makes it very apparent that the complete original saddle would have been adorn with gouchos, intricate silverwork and tooled leather. Exquisit silversmith craftmanship throughout, adorn in the center with a thick seven leaf spiral flower; elaborate repousse and hand etched in a closely symetrical floral filigree motif on footplate; hinged arch with scrollwork and florwering vines and attached suspension ring. The bottom has a squared silver support beam which has been hand-stamped "V. E. A." which is more than likely the artist initials. That said, this was made before laws regulating assay marks (gold & silver % amounts) and it wasn't typical to see a humbled artists maker's mark or company name on silver or gold work. However, it is very easy to see how a masterpiece such as this would have the proud maker's initials after the countless hours put into this relic. The SCRAP WEIGHT VALUE IS $342.64 ALONE!!! So you could literally melt this down for OVER $300.00. MORE ON THIS TOPIC: A similar example can be found in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum of Art (Accession Number 41.1275.219). When the Spanish came to the Western Hemisphere, they reintroduced the horse to regions where it had long been extinct. This animal had a far-reaching impact on life and culture in the Americas, including the production of equestrian adornments and images. This elaborately decorated, slipper-style stirrup is a luxury example of riding equipment for women. The ladies of Lima, Peru, were renowned for their grace on horseback, and since they rode side-saddle, their stirrups were made singly rather than as part of a pair. THERE IS A RESERVE ON THIS ITEM.
6 MILL CREEK Studios Big Grizzly Bear Bust Sculpture
- Mill Creek Studios Big Bear (Wall) - by artist Joe Slockbower - Limited Edition of 5000 - Includes Certificate of Authenticity - In Original Box MILL CREEK STUDIOS SCULPTURE TITLE: BIG BEAR (Wall) ARTIST: JOE SLOCKBOWER MEASUREMENT: 22 INCHES HIGH AVAILABILITY : LIMITED EDITION CONDITION: NO WEAR OR DAMAGE LIMITED EDITION: YES MSRP: $230.00 WHO IS MILL CREEK STUDIOS? Mill Creek Studios sculpts, produces and sells wildlife, western and Native American sculptures. THE CREATIVE PROCESS To begin with, any artwork is born in the artists' imagination, and takes form with an idea or concept. This is when the composition is established and the mood, movement, and emotion are created giving the sculpture "life." This is what is most important, not all the detail that will come later. This is the time when the artist is "interpreting" what he knows and feels about his subject, and "communicating" that feeling to the eventual viewer. The entire creative process may take a week or many months depending on the size of the work, its complexity, the artists' familiarity with the subject, and obviously, the amount of time dedicated to that project. THE MOLD MAKING PROCESS When the artwork is completed, our team of gifted and knowledgeable mold makers take over to create a flexible rubber mold of the original clay which will capture every detail with fingerprint accuracy. During this process, the clay original is damaged and lost forever. The initial and all important "master" mold of the original is then used to create subsequent production molds for the edition castings. THE CASTING PROCESS Now, at last! What is it made of? Very simply, each piece is composed of a blend of fine resins and pure white alabaster, or alabaster and porcelain powders. When "catalyzed" and poured into a mold, this resin composition will go through a chemical reaction, causing the mixture to harden and expand into every crevasse and detail of the mold. When cooled and removed from the mold, the result is an exact duplicate of the original art. THE CHASING AND PATINA PROCESS At this point each casting is examined, detailed, and cleaned to prepare the sculpture to receive a natural palette of the finest artist acrylics applied layer upon layer by skilled artisans. The beautiful finish which results is designed to enhance and define all the subtle detail of the artwork, as well as contribute to the life and realism of the subject. Whether your home is a sprawling Teton lodge, or an apartment in the city; a home by the sea or a southwestern adobe, we believe that you will find a unique Mill Creek design that perfectly reflects your lifestyle. Perfectly affordable addition for both beginning and serious art collectors!
8 Large Genuine 19th C. Antique Butchers Block Table
Authentic and 100% Original, Large Beautiful Antique Butchers Block Table - ca. late-19th to early-20th Century. Measures 29-1/2" Height x 30" Width x 30" Depth, and 11-1/4" Table Thickness. This is the real deal, not a modern distressed reproduction which still has price tags for thousands. An original, very well worn and used, unrestored and unaltered, very thick and heavy, crafted-by-hand Butchers Block Table with the original lathe turned legs and once copper washed end cap studs, and a whole lot of character. This was most likely produced in the 1880's and used for many years. This has been sitting in a barn for a very long time and has been well preserved. Very strong and sturdy, no need to add extra brackets or reinforcements as far as the structual integrity goes. The legs just slip in and out of deeply auger drilled holes perfectly. We love the look of this table, even though it hasn't even been cleaned- just litterallly wiped off. Can you imagine how incredible this would look after a cleaning and even just some wood oil! Not to mention the the appearance once stained, lacquered, or the many different ways you could treat this beauty. Also, no matter what technique you decide to use, if anything, once cleaned and/or apply a wood treatment you will still be able to see all of the original patina, darkend areas from use, and wear marks. This would be an amazing addition to any setting. The perfect display item that can actually be used on a daily basis for many many years to come. NOTE: Two strong guys can easily move and set this up. The weight will not be nearly as bad as you probably are thinking. 9 RARE 13 Ft Art Deco Tomboy Grocery Porcelain Sign
ATTENTION: VINTAGE PORCELAIN ADVERTISING SIGN COLLECTORS!!! This is a HUGE & VERY RARE original vintage Art Deco TOMBOY Supermarket Grocery Store (local St. Louis grocery market in the 1940s-60s) enamel porcelain sign that measures nearly 14 feet in length. This sign was made in [2] sections and measures almost 13 feet, 6" in length by 30" wide. This also includes an additional bonus, a top portion from another identical sign. This old naturally distressed enameled porcelain advertising sign has been behind a barn on a farm since the Tomboy chain was turned into IGA grocery stores. 16a Rare Antique Bronze Taoist Diety God Statue of Lu
This is a very old Chinese Qing dynasty (18-19th Century) blackend patinaed bronze figural statue or Diety Idol Shrine of depicting "Lu" or "Lou" who is one of the three ancient Chinese Sanxing, the gods of the three stars and the three qualities of Prosperity, Status, and Longevity in Chinese religion. These icons are thought to date back to the Ming dynasty, when the gods of the three stars were represented in human form for the first time. Very high quality, heavy bronze figure with incredible detail and pronounced features. Although hollow, the inside of the statue has been filled with an unknown grey-black sediment or tiny gravel and is very heavy for it's size. Very well casted statue with no casting errors or leftover debris, this was definitely meant for a person of wealth or worship. The exterior is black with beautiful patina, and in a few very slight spots you can see the original bronze underneath the patination. This stands around 9 inches tall. No marks that we found. Lu (Prosperity) wears a Mandarin's outfit; Shou (Longevity) holds a walking stick and has a large bald forehead and often carries a peach of immortality. Sometimes he is mounted on or stands beside a stag and may be Chinese 'medicinal' mushrooms ?? líng zh? (associated with immortality) carpet the ground. Lu is particularly associated with luck in passing examinations which were the traditional passport to prosperity as a government official Daoism is one of the main 'religions' of China. [You will often see this is as ‘Tao’, ‘Taoism’ using the older Wade-Giles spelling of Chinese, Dao is the modern pinyin spelling]. Dào ? means roughly the Way and the name reflects its chief principle, finding the correct path through life. However it is more dynamic than just a fixed path, it adapts and changes always seeking an equitable balance. There are three main aspects of Daoism: philosophy; meditation and folk religion. The philosophy is best known in the West through the book of aphorisms called the 'Dao De Jing' Tao Te Ching ? which can be very roughly translated as the 'Virtuous Way'. The philosophy seeks to find a balance of a person with the world, and is more concerned with self contemplation than with relationships by contrast to Confucianism. The more substantial later work is the Zhuangzi ? (or Chuang Tzu) with many philosophical thoughts; paradoxes; jokes and riddles. It seeks the virtuous way that people should follow. Politics and purely logical thought are rejected as pointless as they do not lead to harmony and peace. As Daoism incorporates the contemplative study of nature, it is from the Daoist strand of Chinese philosophy that scientific inquiry developed. Many Daoist scientists made important discoveries; some as alchemists seeking the elixir of Immortal Life who as a by product contributed to chemistry and physics. The Han Emperor Wudi's quest for immortality stimulated the investigation of various legends concerning the Yellow Emperor. Where Confucianism seeks to put people in their proper place in society, Daoism puts people in the proper place in the world. Lao Zi is the semi-legendary founder of Daoism, from about the same time as Confucius in the Warring States Period (6th century BCE or may be 5th/4th century BCE). The philosophy was refined by Zhuang Zi (399-295BCE).
17 Rare Mikelis Geistauts Don Quixote Wood Sculpture
A very large, original Mikelis Geistauts signed and dated One-of-a-Kind work of Art hand carved wooden sculpture depicting Don Quixote on horse. Measures approx 37" tall by 26" width. Heavy-we did not weigh. This 3 ft plus tall by over 2 ft wide wooden art carving was carved and sculpted from one large piece of wood. Extraordinary work by a well known, listed artist. The tail may have damage, it's very hard to tell if there is loss or if it was meant to be this way, in otherwise or excellent condition. ABOUT THE ARTIST Mikelis Geistauts was born December 15, 1910 in the Latvian county of Rucava in a small community named Geistauti near the city of Liepaja and close to the Baltic Sea. In 1941 he began his sculpture studies at the Latvian Academy of Fine Arts. Geistauts was awarded a scholarship to continue his art education, but the Second World War interrupted his plans. He left Latvia as the front approached, and after the war found himself in a Displaced Persons' Camp, Fischbach, near Nuerenberg, Germany. He established an art workshop there in an unused military barracks, and along with his own work, 40 students studied the art of sculpture with him. The camp was closed and Geistauts immigrated to the U.S. in 1949. He settled in St. Paul, MN, and has continued creating his sculptures. He has used various materials for sculpture - wood, stone, bronze, copper and other materials.
18 Antique United Firemen Insurance Cast Iron Mark
United Firemen’s Insurance Company, Philadelphia. Cast Iron Firemen's Insurance Mark (Plaque) that hung outside the Fire House. Fire insurance marks are metal plaques marked with the emblem of the insurance company which were affixed to the front of insured buildings as a guide to the insurance company's fire brigade. These identification marks were used in the eighteenth and nineteenth century in the days before municipal fire services were formed. The UK marks are called 'Fire insurance plaques'. This does not appear to be a distressed reproduction, the paint and patina appear to have some serious age. If it is repop it's a good one! Features are excellent, mounting holes are cast, and shows outdoor age worn pitting. The back is embossed with a cast logo mark and numbered. We read that the original versions produced in the 19th century had 8 spokes and later changed, this one does have 8 spokes. Also, a lot reproductions are suppose to have 5-6 spokes. All that said, today the people or companies passing off fakes as the real deal are getting good, this may be a good reproduction and you'll have to be the judge.
18a Fire Insurance Co FICo Firemen's Cast Iron Mark
FICo Fire Insurance Co. Cast Iron Fire House Outdoor Mark (building plaque). Vintage/antique painted cast iron outdoor Firemen's Mark for F.I.Co. We are not sure if this is an original or reproduction, if it is infact a reproduction then most likely an older repop. No embossed marks on back. This does not appear to be a distressed reproduction, the paint and patina appear to have some serious age. Features are excellent (not blurry), mounting holes are cast, and shows outdoor age worn pitting. The paint appears to have some serious age, Side Note: this depiction is of one of the first fire wagons, 30 men were needed to pump less than 2 gallons of water per stroke in the c. 1830's.

44 Ancient Prehistoric Dinosaur/Animal Fossil Teeth
This is a scarce collection of ancient prehistoric dinosaur and animal teeth and possibly a very small tusk; mostly or all are of the animal teeth are believed to amphibious animals. We have not positively verified of what they all once belong to all, however, we believe most of these are related to different species of dinosaur. One such tooth is thought to belong to a young Mosasaur. Some may be from a barracuda, crocodile, and/or alligator. One appears to be a very strange anomaly, or at least a very interesting story that may be able to be told by a Paleontologist. It's a tooth within a tooth; a larger tooth with a smaller, possibly a completely different dinosaur/animals tooth stuck inside where the tooth would have been rooted into the gums. Some or all may be very rare finds, these are just a bit out of our expertise. You get all 12 (13 if you include the anomaly) photographed in this lot.

This is a highly sought after and collected men's 1936 Hamilton 'Morley' Elinvar wrist watch 6/0 movement #987-E, 17 jewel movement with 10K gold filled case and stretch band. Serial # 4505695, ca. 1936. Over 80 years old and the movement seems to be running perfectly (probably why so many vintage and Art Deco watch collectors try and get their hands on one). The 1936 Morley came in a 10K gold filled case in yellow only and was only made for two years. The 987-E was given a new monometalic balance with an Elinvar hairspring - that's where the 987-E got the E, as in Elinvar. Better than average on wear, still could use a good cleaning and most prefer a leather band.

120 Rare Antique NAVAJO Silver Twirling Logs Cuff Estimate: 300.00 - 400.00 USD
This is one of the finest pieces of TRUE & ORIGINAL Old Pawn Navajo jewelry we have seen in a long time, ca. 1885-1920. It is definitely Fred Harvey era and has amazing hand crafted characteristics. The bracelet has a pattern of hand stamped traditional Navajo designed symbols, including Whirling Log (well being), Crossed Arrows (friendship), Sun Rays (constancy) and other. It is centered with bead and crossed feather relief work and a beautiful bezel setting with a very old mined and rare rectangular dark green spotted turquoise cabochon gemstone. Uncleaned, was slightly hand polished before consigned. Adult sterling cuffs are slightly flexible and fit most wrists. This bracelet was not made for the trade or commercial market. This is a true piece of early Old Pawn Navajo Native American hand crafted sterling silver jewelry, not meant for retail but rather for traditional significance within the Navajo tribe. It is not marked with silver assay or maker's mark which is expected for a true piece of Old Pawn/Dead Pawn jewelry. Has been tested and is at least 92.5 % sterling silver up to solid .999 fine silver.

It is remarkable that Sri Lanka is not only the most productive source for sapphire, but the sapphire mines there are among the oldest known. According to historical accounts, Ceylon was already known for sapphire by the 2nd century A.D. and there was an active international trade in Ceylon gems by the 4th and 5th century. Many of the most famous sapphires in the world come from Sri Lanka, including the Star of India (563 cts) and the Logan Sapphire (423 cts).
185 Natural 3 CT Custom Cut Helidor Or Imperial Topaz
ATTENTION JEWELERS & GEMSTONE AFICIONADOS!!! Authentic Natural 3 Carat Custom Cushion-Cut Brazilian Golden Beryl (Heliodor) or Imperial Topaz. Beautiful Cut-Clarity-Color! This is a GUARANTEED GENUINE handcut Brazilian Heliodor or Imperial Topaz gemstone purchased from Brazilian gem mines 35 + years ago by a local St. Louis Jeweler. This is one of about twenty or so authentic stones that we have available and will be selling over the next few weeks (There are three different size/cuts in this week). This gemstone, and all of the gemstones that will be available, come from a local St. Louis jeweler who traveled all around the world in search of the highest quality gems during the 1960s-70s. Our consignor bought rough gems directly from owner's of mines and had them cut to his personal specification. This is the last batch, a forgotten case of high quality Heliodore and Imperial Topaz that at some point accidently were mixed together. These were recently found in a safe that hasn't been opened in 35+ years, thats right, they have not seen the light of day for up to five decades. If you took part in last weeks auction then you noticed five display cases with a variety of gemstones - this is from the same consignor and there is well over 40 carats total. We are going to test the market and see how they go, if the consignor's family approves then we will continue to sell, or we will private sell the remainder. Golden beryl can range in colors from pale yellow to a brilliant gold. Unlike emerald, golden beryl generally has very few flaws. The term "golden beryl" is sometimes synonymous with heliodor but golden beryl refers to pure yellow or golden yellow shades. Imperial topaz, also known as precious topaz, is the rarest color of topaz -- a golden-orange to pink hue. ... The incredible value of natural imperial topaz can vary greatly.

256 Historic St. Genevieve Blacksmith Cotton Scale
This is an original antique cast and hand forged wrought iron balance cotton scale from the first and original St. Genevieve, Missouri Blacksmith shop. This is from a descendant of the blacksmith and owner/opperator from the 19th century. The consignor has brought us several other items over the years all found in the blacksmith homestead in the 1960's and we just find it fascinating. The iron is marked with what appears to be a "7" and a "5" as well as hand notched much like a measuring stick. These would have been used to weigh many different goods in these days.

267 Georgian Era Candle Wick Trimmer Snuffer 18-19C
This is a genuine 18th to early 19th century, Georgian Era (ca. 1714 - 1837) Brass Candle Wick Trimmer & Snuffer Scissors. This was extremely important invention in the 18th century as candles were a major necessity prior to electricity some 100 plus years later. Candle making was taught to the children of every household at a very young age during this time. This tool helped maintain and create efficiency. This antique snuffer was definitely used A LOT! There is natural pitting, from constant use over a long period of time and from the oil of the owner/user's skin. This would have been a very long process to achieve this type of natural wear, sheen and patina. This has an amazing, untampered look which is exactly what experts and authenticators want to see when evaluating a genuine antique and can play a factor in determining age.
